What is Birthfit?
It is a movement about all types of humans taking charge of their bodies.
It is a mindset based on growth, education and awareness throughout the parenthood transition.
Birthfit revolves around 4 pillars – fitness, nutrition, mindset and connection.
It is an approach to conception, adoption, and birth.
Our goal is to create a safe space for those transitioning into parenthood, as it is one of the most physical, mental and spiritual experiences we as humans may experience.
Changes during pregnancy can be painful and frustrating. You may have pain at the pubic symphysis (“lightening crotch”) – so you would have to change double leg movements like squats, to single leg movements, like lunges. Your back might start aching because of your growing belly – so working on core stability and neutral pelvis may be a focus for your training. If you’re dealing with diastasis recti, where your abdominal muscles stretch further than typical pregnancy, you may have to change overhead movements. Maybe you have another child and you’re finding it challenging to physically support a toddler while you’re pregnant or with a newborn. Learning how to modify movements is specific to each person and often, working with a professional can help you problem solve more quickly and easily.
Something to try at home:
Breathing is the foundation of movement – and can greatly influence how you move and how your core engages. Breathing is a major component during labor. Here is a video that shows how to belly breathe. If you are comfortable lying on your back, feel free to give it a try! If you would like to try breathing exercises seated or standing, try diaphragmatic breathing – it’s the next step to creating a strong core.
Benefits of getting rehab and therapy during and after pregnancy include:
- decreased pain and discomfort
- improved quality of mobility and movement
- improved recovery from birth
Birthfit is about making the most of your pregnancy – pre, during and post. Taking care of yourself during this incredible time means you are creating a strong foundation of movement, and therefore quality of life, for you and your family.
