Chiropractic Mentorship: Why Supporting the Next Generation Matters

After 25 years in practice as a chiropractor, entrepreneur, and healthcare leader, one of the most rewarding aspects of my career has been mentoring others. While professional success is often measured by personal achievements, I have found that some of the most meaningful moments come from helping others grow
in confidence, achieve their goals, and discover their own potential.

Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of mentoring female entrepreneurs through The Forum, supporting chiropractors through both the Canadian Chiropractic Association and the British Columbia Chiropractic Association, and guiding chiropractic associates and interns within my own clinic.
These experiences have shown me firsthand how valuable chiropractic mentorship can be in helping healthcare professionals develop confidence, leadership skills, and successful careers. Each experience has reinforced the profound value of mentorship, not only for the mentee, but for the mentor as well.

Creating Confidence Through Connection

Starting a business or building a healthcare practice can feel overwhelming. There is no roadmap that perfectly prepares you for the challenges of decision-making, financial management, or work-life balance. Many women in business face additional challenges, including navigating leadership roles, overcoming self-doubt, and balancing professional and personal responsibilities.

Through my work with The Forum, I have had the opportunity to support female entrepreneurs as they launch businesses, overcome obstacles, and pursue ambitious goals. Often, the most valuable thing a mentor can offer is perspective. Sometimes entrepreneurs simply need someone who has faced similar challenges to remind them that setbacks are normal, growth takes time, and success rarely follows a straight path.

Mentorship provides a safe space to ask questions, explore ideas, and gain confidence. It can also help aspiring business owners and healthcare professionals develop leadership skills, make informed decisions, and navigate career growth with greater confidence. Watching women step into leadership roles and achieve goals they once thought impossible has been incredibly inspiring.

Strengthening the Chiropractic Profession

As healthcare providers, we have a responsibility not only to our patients but also to the future of our profession. Through my involvement with the Canadian Chiropractic Association and the British Columbia Chiropractic Association, have enjoyed supporting chiropractors at various stages of their careers.

New graduates often enter practice with clinical skills but limited experience in the realities of running a business, building patient relationships, marketing, team leadership, and work-life integration. Having someone available to answer questions, share experiences, and provide guidance can significantly ease the transition from student to practitioner. For many new chiropractors, mentorship
provides valuable support during the early stages of building a successful and sustainable practice.

Mentorship helps foster professional excellence, ethical practice, and confidence. Chiropractic mentorship also encourages ongoing professional development and helps strengthen leadership within the profession. It also strengthens the profession as a whole by creating a culture of collaboration rather than competition.

One of my favourite mentoring roles is working directly with chiropractic associates and interns in my clinic. They bring fresh ideas, enthusiasm, and a passion for learning. At the same time, they are developing the practical skills and clinical confidence required to become successful practitioners.

Mentoring interns allows me to share not only clinical knowledge but also the importance of communication, empathy, professionalism, and patient-centred care. It is an opportunity to model the values that have guided my own career. Supporting chiropractic interns and associates during this stage of their professional development is both a privilege and a responsibility.

What surprises many people is how much mentors learn from their mentees. Students often challenge us to stay current, think differently, and continually improve our own skills. The relationship becomes mutually beneficial, creating growth for both individuals and strengthening the future of the chiropractic profession.

The Ripple Effect of Mentorship

The true impact of mentorship extends far beyond a single relationship. When we help someone gain confidence, develop leadership skills, or achieve professional success, they often go on to support others in turn. This creates a powerful ripple effect that strengthens businesses, professions, and communities.

Some of the most meaningful moments in my career have come from seeing former mentees launch thriving businesses, become leaders within their professions, mentor others, or simply find greater confidence in themselves. Whether in healthcare, business, or leadership roles, their success becomes part of the mentor’s legacy and contributes to the continued growth of future professionals.

Why We Should All Mentor

You don’t need decades of experience to become a mentor. Every professional has knowledge, experiences, and lessons that can help someone else. Mentorship is not about having all the answers; it’s about being willing to listen, share, encourage, and support.

As women healthcare professionals, entrepreneurs, and community leaders, we have an opportunity to lift others as we climb. By investing in the next generation, we contribute to stronger professions, stronger businesses, and stronger communities. Whether through chiropractic mentorship, healthcare leadership, or
community involvement, each of us has the ability to make a meaningful impact on those who follow.

Looking back on my own journey, I am grateful for the mentors who guided me along the way. Mentoring others is my opportunity to pay that gift forward, and it continues to be one of the most fulfilling parts of my career. Supporting the next generation of chiropractors, healthcare professionals, and leaders is an investment that benefits us all.
