The Benefits of IV Therapy: Is It Right For You?

October 24, 2019 by Jyoti Mistry

IV therapy is gaining more recognition as a preventative and therapeutic treatment for many health conditions! As we deal with low energy levels, increasing stress, environmental pollutants, poor diets, nutrient-depleted soil, overuse of medications and chronic health conditions, IV therapy is an effective way to replenish nutrients, support metabolic processes and optimize health!

What is IV Therapy?

Intravenous (IV) nutrient therapy is an infusion of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that are delivered directly into the bloodstream. It is a specialized therapy that allows higher concentrations of these nutrients to be delivered to the cells, since the procedure bypasses the digestive system. Our cells then use these nutrients to increase energy production, help metabolism, support detoxification pathways and support the repair and healing processes of the body. The greatest benefit of IV therapy is that its therapeutic effects are beyond what can be achieved by oral supplementation.

Who can benefit from IV therapy?

Many conditions can benefit from IV therapy, including:

  • Adrenal fatigue
  • Burnout and chronic stress
  • Chronic Fatigue
  • Detoxification
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Headaches/Migraines
  • Poor immune function
  • Athletic Support – Rehydration and Recovery
  • Acute or chronic infections (colds/flu)
  • Crohns/colitis/malabsorption issues
  • PMS & Hormone imbalances
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Weight loss & metabolism
  • Allergies

Commonly Asked Questions

What’s in the IV?

The most common IV is called a “Myer’s Cocktail” which contains Vitamin C, B vitamins, Magnesium and Calcium. IV infusions are often customized by adding additional nutrients based on the patient’s individual needs and as recommended by your Naturopathic Doctor.

What is the difference between taking vitamins orally vs IV?

Vitamin supplements that are taken orally are absorbed into the body in the small intestine. Absorption rates can vary from individual to individual depending on various factors (i.e stress, chronic disease, gut inflammation etc). Absorption is also limited by whether nutrients are actively or passively absorbed by the body. IV therapy bypasses the absorption process and 100% of the nutrients are delivered directly to the cells. Therefore, patients tend to feel better more quickly than with oral supplementation.

Is IV therapy painful?

The initial insertion of the needle may be slightly painful, however this pain dissipates quite quickly. For the duration of the treatment, typically there is no pain. Occasionally, patients may feel soreness at the site of infusion however adjustment of the needle or reducing the flow rate of the IV can be helpful.

Is IV therapy safe?
Generally, IV therapy is well tolerated by most patients. A detailed health history is required prior to IV therapy to determine whether IV therapy is appropriate for each patient. The procedure involves the use of sterile equipment and materials to reduce the risk of infection. Some of the risks of IV therapy include local swelling, bruising or irritation of a vein, however your Naturopathic Doctor will be monitoring you throughout the treatment. Overall, IV therapy is very safe.

How often can I have an IV treatment?

The frequency of IV treatments will depend on your particular condition. After your detailed health history, your Naturopathic Doctor will recommend how often to have an IV. This recommendation can also change depending on how you feel and the improvement of your symptoms.

How can I prepare for my IV treatment?

It is best and highly recommended to be well hydrated and to have had something to eat prior to receiving IV therapy. Proper hydration will allow easier access to your veins and having eaten prior to IV therapy will prevent any lightheadedness.
